Birth Registration Abroad

Kenyan citizens can register births that occur abroad at their nearest Kenya embassy or high commission to obtain a Kenyan birth certificate.

Eligibility

A birth can be registered at a Kenya embassy if:

  • At least one parent is a Kenyan citizen
  • The child was born outside Kenya
  • Registration should be done within 6 months of birth (late registration is possible with additional documentation)

Required Documents

  • Foreign birth certificate of the child (original + certified copy)
  • Both parents' Kenyan passports or national ID cards (original + copies)
  • Parents' marriage certificate (if applicable)
  • Completed birth registration form (available at the embassy)
  • Two passport-sized photographs of the child
  • Proof of residence in the host country
For late registration (more than 6 months after birth), additional documents such as a sworn affidavit explaining the delay may be required.

Registration Process

  1. Contact your nearest Kenya embassy to confirm requirements and book an appointment
  2. Complete the birth registration form
  3. Submit all required documents at the embassy
  4. Pay the applicable fee
  5. The embassy forwards the application to the Civil Registration Department in Nairobi
  6. Collect the Kenyan birth certificate when ready (processing time varies)
Important

Registering your child's birth at a Kenya embassy is essential for obtaining a Kenyan passport, national ID, and establishing Kenyan citizenship for the child. Under the 2010 Constitution, a child born to at least one Kenyan parent is entitled to Kenyan citizenship regardless of place of birth.
