M-Pesa - Essential for Kenya

M-Pesa is Kenya's unofficial currency. More transactions happen via M-Pesa than cash in many areas.

What M-Pesa Does

  • Pay for taxis, restaurants, hotels, shops, supermarkets
  • Pay for Uber and Bolt rides
  • Send money to anyone with a Safaricom number
  • Pay utility bills and online purchases
  • Withdraw cash at any M-Pesa agent (green kiosks everywhere)

How to Register

  1. Get a Safaricom SIM card first
  2. Visit any M-Pesa agent or Safaricom store
  3. Present your passport
  4. Registration takes 5 minutes
  5. Load cash at any agent; start paying

Tip: Load KES 5,000-10,000 ($38-$77) onto M-Pesa for a week's spending. You can use it for almost everything.
