Kenya eTA System Replaces Traditional Visas
January 2024Kenya has officially transitioned from the traditional visa system to the Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) system. From January 2024, all visitors (except EAC citizens and exempt categories) must apply for an eTA online at etakenya.go.ke before travelling to Kenya. The eTA costs USD 30 and allows stays of up to 90 days.

2025-2026Kenya continues the transition to the new ePassport (biometric passport) system. All Kenyan citizens are encouraged to apply for the new ePassport through the eCitizen portal. The old-generation passports are being phased out. Embassies abroad now capture biometric data for ePassport applications.

OngoingUnder Article 16 of the 2010 Constitution of Kenya, Kenyan citizens are permitted to hold dual citizenship. Kenyans who previously lost their citizenship by acquiring foreign nationality can apply for restoration through their nearest embassy or the eCitizen portal.
