Kenya ePassport Application & Renewal

Complete guide to applying for or renewing a Kenya ePassport (biometric passport) at an embassy or high commission abroad.

ePassport Transition

Kenya has transitioned to the ePassport (biometric passport) system. All applications must be made through the eCitizen portal. Old-generation passports are being phased out.

Fees are payable in local currency equivalent at the prevailing exchange rate. Payment methods vary by embassy.

Application Process

  1. Register on eCitizen

    Create an account at ecitizen.go.ke if you do not already have one.

  2. Complete Online Application

    Log in to eCitizen, select "Department of Immigration Services", and complete the passport application form.

  3. Pay the Fee Online

    Pay the applicable fee through the eCitizen payment gateway (M-Pesa, bank transfer, or card).

  4. Book Embassy Appointment

    Contact your nearest Kenya embassy or high commission to book a biometric capture appointment.

  5. Visit Embassy for Biometrics

    Attend your appointment with all required documents. Fingerprints and photograph will be captured digitally.

  6. Wait for Processing

    Applications from abroad are sent to the Immigration Department in Nairobi. Processing takes 4-8 weeks.

  7. Collect Your ePassport

    The embassy will notify you when your passport is ready for collection.

  • Two recent passport-sized photographs
  • Payment receipt from eCitizen

Renewal

  • Completed eCitizen application (printed)
  • Current/expired passport (original)
  • Kenya national ID card (original + copy)
  • Two recent passport-sized photographs
  • Payment receipt from eCitizen
Minors: For children under 18, both parents' IDs and consent are required. Additional documents may include the parents' marriage certificate and the child's birth certificate.
